About Us
“Inside Inspiration”
is what we have been creating.
Here at Vale, over the last 4-6 months, we have been changing the way the store looks. What we have
created will hopefully provide you with “Inside Inspiration” for your own home.
New Lifestyle Room sets, all displayed with complimentary accessories
and pictures. I am confident that what we do and how we do it is the
reason why so many people keep coming back to us year after year.
I feel especially proud when a customer returns to the store, as many of you
have done, for the last 45 years and can greet us like old friends.
With so many new ranges constantly arriving at the store we look forward to
welcoming you on your next visit.

About Us
I hope when you have finished looking at our website you will be full of
inspiration and head straight for the showroom.
When you arrive you will be greeted but not pounced on! Our aim is to
create an inviting, friendly atmosphere with the help of our staff.

Our History
As we approach our 50th anniversary, I believe we can look back and be proud of what all the staff at Vale Furnishers has achieved. In 1960 my grandfather bought the first completed shop in a parade opposite where the shop now is. Initially access to the store was via a plank over a muddy building site, which later became the service road to the shops.
The business traded as a small village furniture shop until my father joined some 40 years ago, and since that point the business has grown from strength to strength. First, we bought the neighbouring units and converted the flats above into additional showroom space. Back then, the displays were packed tight, often with tables double stacked: not what you would describe as aspirational settings. We sold vast quantities of carpet and had one major furniture supplier – G Plan. In the G Plan boom days you could expect to wait the best part of a year to receive your order, but not with Vale Furnishers. We ran a high-tech stock book (which we still use today) that listed the model number, date due and the customers’ name. This system allowed us to pre-order and then offer a far quicker delivery on G Plan (often immediate delivery). We were advertising in many Yellow Pages around the country and as the business grew we knew we had to move site or strangle any future growth. The garage/forecourt and pub across the road came up for sale, which we decided to buy. It was the middle of the 80s recession at the time so we were naturally wary, but equally we knew if we were to continue we needed a considerably larger store.
In the Christmas of 1993 we opened our purpose built 20,000sq.ft showroom – quite a jump from the 5,000sq.ft shop we had been in previously. Due to the huge increase in space we now needed more suppliers, so we added galleries from Stag, Nathan, Parker Knoll, Ducal, Ercol, Old Charm and many more, to sit along side the existing G Plan ranges. The sales grew at an alarming rate increasing our turnover to levels we never expected.
Since then we have continued to grow the business and have now extended the showroom twice. This makes us one of the largest furniture stores in the south of England at 32,000sq.ft. The product ranges have changed over the years and I am pleased to say we don’t have tables double stacked anymore! Instead we show the furniture in lifestyle room sets with matching accessories and pictures. Several things have remained the same over the years. Many of our staff have been with us for a long time: Alex and Ron have been with us for nearly 20 years, Alan has been with us for 14 years and many of the “new” staff are already approaching five years. I believe it is the consistency of the staff and the core values they share for simple and honest customer service that makes Vale Furnishers different. This is why we have won many awards over the years, including “Furniture Retailer of the Year” several times.
Whether you are a previous customer or a new one just starting to search for furniture, we would welcome you to the store for a look around. The fresh coffee machine continues to work hard along with all of our staff!
